Church of San Pietro in Otranto

Chiesa di San Pietro a Otranto

Structural consolidation of the walls and external mortar

The church is one of the medieval buildings in Southern Italy that is most closely linked to the Byzantine building tradition; its first structure dates back to the 5th century, with additions and alterations from the 8th century until the 12th century. The restoration project focused on the phenomena of alveolization and efflorescence on the smooth and moulded walls, on the covering, as well as on the wooden frames and the lighting system. The work also involved the structural consolidation of the walls and external mortar by means of "scuci-cuci" (method of patching/indenting), impregnation and cleaning, consolidation and integration. Particular attention was paid to the restoration of the painted film on the wall paintings.
